Shoreditch Public Realm and Greening Framework

Reshaping Shoreditch’s traffic and transport infrastructure

The Shoreditch Public Realm and Urban Greening Framework, developed in collaboration with Hackney Council, presents a series of ambitious proposals to reshape the area’s traffic and transport infrastructure, green infrastructure and biodiversity. Supporting the Future Shoreditch Area Action Plan (AAP), the framework provides a coordinated approach to enhancing the character and activity of Shoreditch over the next 15 years.

Shoreditch is a vibrant, lively neighbourhood located within the City Fringe. As London’s third most visited night time destination, it sees significant 24 hour activity and serves as a major transit hub. However, the area faces several accessibility challenges – streets currently prioritise vehicles, cycle routes are often unclear, and major traffic corridors contribute to a fragmented pedestrian experience.

Vision for Clifton Road

Publica’s vision is guided by three core principles:

  1. Create an integrated movement network that prioritises pedestrians, cyclists, and local activity, reduces the dominance of vehicular traffic and enables flexible, active movement.
  2. Deliver bold urban greening to promote biodiversity and greener travel routes.
  3. Provide a sustainable, climate resilient public realm that supports Shoreditch's neighbourhoods and creative character.

Mapping an integrated movement network

A cohesive network of 28 strategic public realm projects were identified to achieve lasting, transformative improvements across Shoreditch.
