Euston Public Realm Strategy

Ensuring urban change can be a process of enrichment for all

Lendlease’s Euston OSD Masterplan forms part of the HS2 programme and presents a unique opportunity to reimagine one of London’s principal gateways. The project will reimagine the arrival into the capital while reconnecting communities long divided by the railway tracks running north through to Camden Town.

Publica’s Public Realm Strategy establishes a spatial and cultural framework for this significant development, ensuring the scale and potential of the project are realised in ways that benefit of local communities, Londoners and visitors alike. The strategy considers the network of public spaces both within and surrounding the masterplan area, exploring the role a major station can play as a key civic building within the city.

Looking beyond the immediate site, the strategy examines the wider urban context, defining the character, identity and spatial configuration of the public realm, and opportunities to reintegrate the areas on either side of the railway.

The Public Realm Strategy is informed by a wider area survey – an evidence-base developed through contextual research. This includes analysis of existing and emerging character, patterns of use, movement, built fabric and open spaces, development context and the diverse communities living and working in the surrounding areas.

The commission also included a research study addressing Social Isolation and Loneliness (SIL). This research brought together insights from Lendlease’s collaboration with the Loneliness Lab alongside exemplary initiatives from across the area. These findings will inform the delivery of the project and its public realm over the coming years. The strategy draws on this contextual understanding, Lendlease’s ambition to demonstrate best practice in addressing SIL, and Publica’s unique research-led approach to ensure that urban transformation becomes a process of enrichment for all.

This project provided an extraordinary opportunity to bring together a number of Publica’s work streams (survey, strategy and research) towards integration of one of London’s most compelling neighbourhoods with the future of one its most significant stations.
