Thames Piers

Public Realm Study

Thames river services are the fastest growing form of transport in London: 2 million journeys were taken in the year 2000, 5 million in 2008. New piers and services have been introduced in the last few years and the river is still developing as a public transport and recreational route.

Publica explored the relationship between the Thames piers and the surrounding public realm. We identified ways of better integrating the piers into the riverside streetscapes and pedestrian routes by addressing issues of visibility, legibility and connectivity and changing perception to support a seamless, integrated river service.

Publica studied two central London piers, Embankment and Blackfriars, and presented the findings to the Mayor’s River Concordat at City Hall in February 2012.
