Drawing In Public

Workshop Module

Publica is committed to using creative, visual and accessible tools to facilitate community planning. Drawing in Public is a collaboration with illustrator and activist Lucinda Rogers. The aim is to share Lucinda’s approach to drawing and our approach to the public realm with young architects and planners. By encouraging critical involvement and direct observation of the urban environment within architectural education, we aim to readdress the attention given to the public realm in architectural schools.

In 2011 we ran a workshop module for the Spatial, Planning and Urban Design MA students at London Metropolitan University. The students explored drawing as a tool to understand the public realm at two sites, Aldgate in London and Coney Island in New York. The project connected to a wider Aldgate project, a cross-departmental investigation into the social, economic and physical forces at play in the area.
