Launch of ‘A future for the Oxford Street district’

Publica, working with Volterra and Gerald Eve, has completed a two year study and report on Oxford Street and the surrounding area, exploring how it can be transformed from a single shopping street into a varied, entertaining and well-connected district of distinct neighbourhoods. The newly launched report, ‘A future for the Oxford Street district’, and accompanying website, illustrates a bold aspiration for this area to become a vibrant centre for civic life and commerce with the world’s best retail and culture destination at its heart. 

Commissioned by New West End Company (NWEC), the report will be officially launched on 15 June 2017 at the 2017 London Real Estate Forum by Westminster City Council Leader, Councillor Nickie Aiken, Sue West, Director of Operations at Selfridges & Co., Transport Commissioner, Mike Brown MVO, and Jace Tyrell NWEC CEO. 

‘A future for the Oxford Street district’ has been developed in response to the ambitious vision adopted by the West End Partnership for the wider West End and it also forms the basis for New West End Company’s response to the recent Westminster City Council and Transport for London consultation on the transformation of Oxford Street. The report is intended both to inspire and to demonstrate how the Oxford Street district can make a greater contribution to the success of the West End, and in doing so secure its future as a world-class shopping, cultural and commercial centre. Actions for delivering this future will include environmental and public realm upgrades to reduce traffic, improving air quality, and enhancing wayfinding and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. A dynamic mix of uses across the district will also be sensitively established, together with a vibrant district-wide programme of cultural uses, activities and events that will reinvigorate the area and safeguard its future.
