Periferie: The G124 Project Report in Rome

Periferie: The G124 Project Report in Rome

Lucy Musgrave attended the first annual report of Renzo Piano’s working group, the G124, at the Palazzo Giustiniani in Rome on 27th November.

The event brought together Mayors, local government representatives and urban practitioners to listen to the ideas of the G124 and learn about the work they have carried out over the last year.

Periferie: The G124 Project Report in Rome

The G124, set up by Piano in his role as an Italian Senator, comprises an annually changing group of six young architects working alongside urban professionals to consider the outskirts of Italian cities and the future role of the suburbs, in a project called ‘Periferie’.

As part of this project Renzo set a question in the Italian State Examination for high school leavers, the question included a passage from Renzo Piano stating his thoughts on the suburbs and their future, it then asked students to critically consider his position and detail their own thoughts, beliefs and own ideas. There was an overwhelming response with over 60,000 students choosing to respond to Renzo’s question. The recurring themes have been collated and five students’ responses have been published in the ‘Periferie’ publication.

Barbican and Golden Lane Area Strategy

Barbican and Golden Lane Area Strategy

Publica is working with the City of London to develop a public realm strategy for the Barbican and Golden Lane area. This is the third project that the City has commissioned from Publica, and follows strategies for the Liverpool Street and Bank areas, both now adopted as City policy. The strategy will be developed over the next twelve months, and put forward principles and proposals for improvements to the area’s streets and spaces that respond to the needs of its many user groups. An integral part of the strategy will also be the development of a shared vision for the area’s cultural institutions.
