Gingerbread Neighbourhood

Gingerbread Neighbourhood

The Publica team took a festive away-day on Friday to make gingerbread houses at CC’s Cake Shop.

Our uncompromising approach to townscape and good integration of social infrastructure included design development of terraced housing, a church, a cultural centre and a dog kennel. Sadly a specially-commissioned artwork was later eaten on the night bus.

Final Aldgate Lecture

Final Aldgate Lecture

The Aldgate Project lecture series concludes tonight with oral historian Alan Dein and photographer Philipp Ebeling. Last week we heard from Richard Hougez of The Haircut Before the Party, whose free hair salon occupied a Toynbee Street shop for six months this year, and Laura Oldfield Ford, whose drawing from her ‘zine Savage Messiah is pictured above.

Ruth Beale has been chairing the Q&A after each lecture and drawing out some of the themes of intervention, obversation, political action and documentation that have emerged from the artists’ practices.

Bristol Festival of Ideas

Bristol Festival of Ideas

Anna Mansfield is giving a presentation at Arnolfini in Bristol on Saturday on the impact of the work of American urbanist Jane Jacobs (pictured).

2011 is the 50th anniversary of Jane Jacobs’ book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, a timely moment to consider what the book can still teach us about neighbourhoods, planning and how cities work. Anna will join Ben Rogers of the Centre for London, and author P D Smith on a panel chaired by Geoff Dyer at a Festival of Ideas event.

Aldgate Project Lectures

Aldgate Project Lectures

Exciting things are emerging from Publica’s work with London Metropolitan University students on the Aldgate Project. Over 300 students from across the schools of art and architecture are currently working on individual projects, work from which will be showcased at an exhibition later in the academic year.

A series of curated lectures will soon be taking place (mid-November to mid-December) at which invited artists and practitioners will discuss their Aldgate based projects. The series will start on November 17th with artists Nabil Ahmed and Ben White & Eileen Simpson, whose film ‘The Brilliant and the Dark’ is featured above.

Aldgate Project Walks

Aldgate Project Walks

Publica’s curated series of walks have come to an end, but we are pleased to say that despite the poor weather (!) all went very well, providing students with interesting alternative insights into the area. The walks covered five key themes – gender, faith, philanthropy, trade, the super-local – and were led by individuals and organisations who have worked or are working in the Aldgate area. Many thanks to the practioners: Ben Perrot of Muf, Anne Thorne of Anne Thorne Architects, Kate Rich, Graham Fisher of Toynbee Hall and Anna Aapola of A Different Drum.

This photo shows students looking at surviving fragments of objects found in the ‘White Chapel’ in Altab Ali park as part of Ben Perrot’s walk on faith.

New Publica Film Unit

New Publica Film Unit

Publica has a new film unit! Kate Herbert (long standing team member and practising artist) is making short films and video portraits that will form an integral part of our area surveys and project work.

We are very excited about the possibilities that filmaking presents to document the character and use of neighbourhoods in an immediate and accessible way.

Aldgate Project – London Metropolitan University

Aldgate Project – London Metropolitan University

Publica is curating a series of walks and lectures for London Metropolitan University students. It is part of ‘The Aldgate Project‘, where students across the Architecture and Spatial Design (ASD) department and Sir John Cass Department of Art are studying and responding to Aldgate. The walks hope to draw out show Aldgate’s culturally and historically rich, fragmented, fast-changing urban complexities. Lucy Musgrave gave a keynote speech at the launch today. Publica friend and artist Lucinda Rogers will also be organising a ‘Drawing in Public’ workshop with MA Spatial Planning and Urban Design students.
