44 Lincoln’s Inn Fields receives planning permission

44 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, a major new development for The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), was granted planning permission by Westminster City Council on 13 June. Publica played a major role in the design of the public realm in the lead up to the submission for planning approval.

Purchased by LSE in 2013, the largely 1960s building will be entirely demolished and will be replaced with a new building by Grafton Architects to house The Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship, the academic departments of Accounting, Finance and Management, teaching facilities, as well as sports and arts rehearsal facilities including a Sports England standard multi-purpose sports hall for use by staff and students of LSE.

Publica reviewed Grafton's overall strategy for the design of the public realm in terms of quality, viability, compliance with Westminster's vision. Our team developed initial public realm proposals to guide and shape the concept design, providing strategic guidance throughout the concept design process to help steer the design team and ensure the integration of the building with its immediate context. Publica's work included further investigation into the surrounding streets and spaces and formulating ideas for a wider public realm strategy.
